The ancient process of weaving a silk saree has evolved over time but our heritage remains steeped in each warp and weft of a traditional Kanchipuram saree. Weavers pay homage to a craft with mastering complex weaving techniques that have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries and have stood the test of time. 

The history of the Kanjivaram is as old as our myths. Infact Kanjeevaram Weavers are said to be the descendants of Markanda, a mythical figure from an ancient era known for weaving clothes for the Gods themselves. Originating from the small town of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu we see markers of this heritage in each saree’s temple border, flora and fauna inspired motifs and royal colours set against gold.

The exquisite craft of weaving Kanjeevaram sarees has deep roots that trace back centuries, originating in the sacred temple precincts of Kanchipuram, a town renowned for its rich textile heritage. Skilled weavers, inspired by the vibrant tales found in ancient mythology and the intricate details of historical sculptures, began creating the elegant six-yard-long saree, commonly referred to today as "Pudavai."

As the craft evolved, a standardized structure developed, showcasing a meticulously woven body adorned with ornate borders and accompanied by a striking pallu—the end piece that drapes gracefully over the shoulder. In the early days, weavers relied on natural dyes sourced from the abundant flora and fauna surrounding them, imbuing the luxurious silk yarn with hues that echoed the beauty of the environment. Blue, named in honour of the legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi, and Rexona Green, inspired by a popular soap brand, have become fashionable choices among saree enthusiasts.
