A Symbol of Prosperity and Devotion in Varamahalakshmi Pooja

Have you ever wondered what our festivals would be like if dressing up in beautiful and vibrant sarees was not a part of the celebration? Pretty dull and boring right? Among all the festivals we celebrate in India throughout the year, Varamahalskshmi pooja is the one of great significance. It is an observance to commemorate the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi.

Apart from making beautiful rangolis, dressing the goddess idols with stunning sarees, and fasting, adorning graceful Kanchipuram sarees is definitely every woman's favorite thing to do. Afterall, the silk sarees and the vibrant colours add to the festival's joyous spirit.

The Essence of Varamahalakshmi Pooja

Varamahalakshmi Pooja is a Hindu festival celebrated primarily by married women in the southern states of India. The day of the pooja falls on the Friday preceding the full moon (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Shravana, corresponding to July-August in the Gregorian calendar.

Varamahalakshmi is regarded as the goddess who showers boons (vrata). Praying on this auspicious day is believed to be similar to praying to Ashtalaksmi or the eight goddesses of Love (Priti), Wealth (Sri), Earth (Bhu), Learning (Saraswati), Fame (Kriti), Strength (Pushti), Pleasure (Tushti), and Peace (Shanti). This pooja is observed mainly by married women seeking the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi on their families, especially their husbands.

Historical Significance of Varamahalakshmi Pooja

As history suggests, Varalakshmi was incarnated from the Kshir Sagar or the Milky Ocean. Folklore tales believe that Lord Parameswara asked his wife Parvati to perform prayers to seek blessings from the Goddess, after which the married women of the village also started praying, following Parvathi's steps.

As per the Puranic text, Goddess Lakshmi once appeared in the dream of Charumati, a devotee of Goddess Lakshmi who lived in the ancient town of Magadha Kingdom of Kaundinyapu. The Goddess asked her to worship Varalakshmi, a form of Goddess Lakshmi. Charumati then discussed her dream with her family. They encouraged her to conduct the prayers, and many women in the town followed this ritual.
